Looking Back

I have just returned from Madrid where we managed to catch the anniversary show of Picasso’s “Guernica”. Seeing this masterpiece for the first time was an extraordinary moment for me and a humbling one.

As always Picasso’s sureness of line and expressive power carry all before them and in this piece he has also used the effect of colour absence to emphasise the unspeakable horror of the event he was commemorating.

It is a tribute to the power of visual art to express the inexpressible.

Looking Forward

For nearly a year now I have been working towards my next show: “Made Visible” opening in November, details below. This show will feature mostly new Dance paintings with a few new abstract pieces.

It has been immensely exciting to focus so completely on a body of work with the aim of regenerating a style of painting and to create smaller and more diverse pieces. Also a joy to work closely again with my wonderful curator Vanessa Clark.

The title of the show is taken from a quotation by the great US Choreographer, George Balanchine that “Dance is music made visible”, it is particularly relevant to me because my Dance work is always linked directly to the music chosen at the time. This video features part of piece by the Argentine composer Piazzolla, his

For some of the new work I have returned to oil paint, which has given me greater scope both in colour and form.

Dance is always a challenge, capturing the transient moment, I hope I have managed to express even for a moment the inexpressible with perhaps a nod to the great Pablo.
